I feel so old saying stuff like this. And believe me, I am not old. But honestly, what even is this? It’s apparently called Vanilluxe. It’s the evolved form of something else (that looks like a single ice-cream thingy). It kind of reminds me of Doduo, except instead of a two-headed bird, it’s a two-headed strange, mutant ice-cream-in-a-cone, solid ice and snow Pokémon thing. I feel like this is some kind of practical joke, like an April Fool’s prank saying “So these are the new Pokémon (trololololol).” Who even thought of this, and what in the world were they thinking?
I normally don’t comment on things like this, but forgive me. It really makes me sad to see things like this in the #Vanilluxe tag
I think you might have your nostalgia goggles on a little too tight. Just because you enjoyed the way Pokemon was as a kid does not mean it’s “worse” now that it’s not the same and there are new Pokemon. Plenty of Gen I Pokemon were unoriginal, “you’ve got to be kidding me” designs.
Diglett is a very simply drawn, rather stupid-looking creature that evolves into the wonderfully original Dugtrio, who is… Three Diglett in one Pokemon!
Magnemite is based off of an everyday object - a magnet. It’s as though someone was rummaging through their drawers looking for something to base a Pokemon off of.
They’re both great, and so is this guy.
New Pokemon are not “killing your childhood”, and if you think that, then clearly you don’t value those memories as much as you think you do, if you let new Pokemon “ruin” it for you. I’ve stuck with Pokemon since the very beginning, and I think Vanilluxe is one of the most original, coolest (pun not intended!) ones yet.
It’s based off of a food item, which is a first, despite the idea being kind of an obvious one. It resembles an ice cream cone, but is actually made purely out of ice, with the “cone” being its body and the “ice cream” actually being snow piled on top of it that isn’t part of it at all. The new Pokemon were also introduced in a new region, Unova, which is based on the USA. More specifically, the NYC/New Jersey area. If you’ve been around those parts, you’d know that good ice cream is a stable of New York life, and Americans can pride themselves on nothing else if not our love of all things sweet and frozen.
Vanilluxe was also one of very few Pokemon to be designed by an American, which shows that Game Freak, the company behind Pokemon, really went all out in making the new games authentic and keeping with the theme of included many cultures and ideas and uniting them.
Furthermore, the idea of a Pokemon based on an ice cream cone is ridiculous, and that’s part of what’s so great about it! A lot of the Pokemon designs are ridiculous, and that’s what makes them memorable and likable (Lickitung, Snorlax, and Psyduck are some Gen I examples for you). Vanilluxe is also surprisingly good in battle, despite having a pretty shallow movepool and a poor in-game choice due to how late it learns some of its more useful attacks. It’s one of the best pure Ice types in the game, I think.
It seems to me like you haven’t explored the Pokemon series at all since your childhood. I strongly recommend you try getting back into it, if that’s the case. Some things have changed, but not nearly as much as you’d think, and it’s still a great series that just keeps getting better, which is extremely rare for a series that’s been as merchandised and milked for cash as it has.
My problem with Vanilluxe is that it’s based on a food item formed from the excretions of another animal. It’s strange...
Vanilluxe looks fun, I need to give him a try sometime!
I love Vanilluxe, I don’t get why people bash it so much. I’ve always thought it’s design is fun and creative :C
